Improving the shopping experience through real customer feedback

Oogst is a partially unmanned farm store operating in four locations in the Netherlands (Leiden, Haarlem, Woerden and Montfoort). Customers enter the store and do their shopping independently using the Oogst app. Their challenge is to increase the number of returning customers after the first few visits. In order to achieve that goal, the shopping experience must be optimised.

Brief:

The goal was to provide actionable insights about how first time visitors experience shopping at Oogst.

Our approach: mystery shopping by our Food Forum members

In order to obtain feedback about the shopping experience, we needed real consumers to experience what shopping at Oogst was like. We selected 17 participants from our Food Forum community that live near one of the Oogst stores. We asked them to the download the Oogst app, sign up and go to the shop. There they bought some of the products and went through the whole shopping experience. And in the meantime making mental notes about the experience.

Back home they shared their opinions. How did it go? How did they feel? What could be improved in the experience?

Impact

The rich and brutally honest feedback from our community members led to a number of recommendations to improve the shopping experience. These recommendations cover a wide range of topics, such as to assortment, the use of app and providing assistance to first time shoppers.

Feedback on our work:

Joost van Schie, Farmer and co-founder of Oogst

“Future of Food Institute did an excellent job, asking the right questions and structuring and conducting qualitative customer research. It resulted in crystal clear insights at the desired level of detail that allowed us to directly and specifically redesign our stores, train staff and further develop the app.
