WAITING FOR VANILLA WITH LOW TRANSPORT costs
After 5 years, WUR researcher Filip van Noort concludes the research project in which he tried to optimise the cultivation of vanilla in greenhouses in the Netherlands. Vanilla is an expensive product that grows on Madagascar and is transported all over the world. If it would be possible to produce vanilla in greenhouses it would be cheaper and less harmful to the environment.
However, growing the plant is not easy. After two years of waiting for the orchid to flower, it has to be pollinated by hand and the harvest cannot be predicted. Flip van Noort still sees research opportunities to continue the project. |
