Sensitive measures to halve food waste by 2030Every year, 150 euros of good food is thrown away per person in the Netherlands. That is about a tenth of what the average Dutch person spends on food, or more than a month of food in the trash. Food waste in the European Union (EU) accounts for 170 million tons of CO2 emissions. That is roughly equal to the total CO2 emissions of the Netherlands. ABN AMRO has conducted research into the measures that can be taken to combat food waste. They discuss 4 sensitive measures; gene processing to prevent loss, plastic packaging to extend shelf life, the end of (company) restaurants and the abolition of volume discounts so that consumers are less stimulated to buy too much of a product.
