Who develops the best recyclable Coffee Cup?

The Next Gen Cup Challenge is a competition organized by some of the largest food companies in the world.  They include McDonalds, Starbucks and Coca Cola. The challenge: Develop the ultimate coffee cup. Today’s disposable coffee mugs pose a huge problem. Because of the polyethylene inside, they are hardly recyclable. And yearly 600,000,000 (!) are used. But a good alternative is not yet available. The coffee mugs have to hold and keep red-hot liquids warm, without falling apart.

All shortlisted technologies use one of these three approaches:

  • replacing the hard-to-recycle polyethylene inside with something else,
  • use new materials that don’t need any inside at all anymore,
  • reusable cups collected after use.

In September the first products will be tested in restaurants, stadiums and universities.  The winners may share a million dollars evenly and actually develop their own product.
