How urban farming makes the cities greener

Food Chain, Short Chains

10-09-2019
Dutch sustainability community 'For Tomorrow's World' has made an overview of initiatives in the field of urban agriculture. Transport kilometers are saved by producing food within the city limits. But it also provides an opportunity for education and creating awareness. By showing how food is produced, consumers will hopefully appreciate it more.

A few examples of urban farming initiatives:
  • GROWx – vertical farm in Amsterdam
  • Duurzame Kost – Trout and vegetable farm in Eindhoven
  • Dakakker – agriculture on the roof in Rotterdam
  • Fruittuin van West – biodynamic farm where you can harvest yourself in Amsterdam
  • Stadsboerderij Almere– With cows and fields in and around Almere

You can also do it yourself. For example, with composting with the Balkonton (GFT waste) and MijnStadstuin (your own vegetable garden near the city). There are countless possibilities to put your green fingers to work and make the city a bit more beautiful, cozy and sustainable.
